Sugar ration ends for 12 lakh families in MP, causing market price rise

Madhya Pradesh sugar ration halted for 12 lakh families

No allocation since April

Approximately 12 lakh families in Madhya Pradesh have not received the subsidized sugar since April. According to the AePDS portal, sugar allocation was zero from April to August, after receiving amounts in January‑March.

Impact on Mauwanj

In Mauwanj, 17,385 families have waited five months for the sugar. Officials say the distribution at Fair Price Shops stopped because the state did not release the allocation.

Previous allocations

January: 13,163 kg, February: 15,197 kg, March: 15,910 kg. April through August saw no allocation.

Market price

The AAY rate remains Rs 20 per kg on the official portal, but the market price is Rs 65‑70 per kg. This creates a difference of about Rs 45‑50 per kg.

Consequences for families

Households must purchase sugar at market rates. For 1 kg per month over five months, the extra cost is roughly Rs 225‑250.

Effect on tea vendors

Tea shop owner Rajeshwar Prasad Patel says sugar cost rise increased his expenses, but raising tea prices reduces customers, hurting earnings.

Political reaction

Opposition leaders, including Sheik Mukhtar Siddiqui of Mauwanj Minority Cell, linked the sugar shortage to ethanol policy. Congress and AAP have also questioned sugar availability.
